I am in zone 8b, and Joan Senior is one of my absolute favorites. She grows and spreads prolifically here, and her bloom period is quite long. Blooms are always perfect, and the foliage is attractive all winter.

I did have a bad rust outbreak in April this year, and Joan was severely affected. I cut all the fans back and treated with Green Magic. She has recovered and is putting on an impressive bloom show in June.

In bloom now (June 10, '18) since mid May in south Louisiana. I believe its breeder, Durio, is a south LA native in a town nearby. 'Joan Senior' is plain but elegant, standing tall and being the palest yellow that looks white from 5' away. My flowers are 5", and not 6" as recorded. Maybe they'll be larger as it gets more established this year. I've only had it since last fall, so I'm excited to see its reblooming schedule. It's similar to the 'Ice Carnival' I have, too, but 'Joan' is not as tall.

Since my earlier comment, I have had to get rid of my beautiful Joan Senior plants, which were among my very favorites. I thought I had solved the rust problem, but I hadn't. Unless you are willing to spray regularly with fungicides, I wouldn't plant this one if you are in the South. I regret saying this since the plant is beautiful and an excellent bloomer and increaser.

Bloomed at my house, much weaker than Alexa's. I should probably have watered more.

DeweyRooter On September 6, 2021 Plant Ended (Removed, Died, Discarded, etc)
Dug up and donated to a northern home. Since plants were so susceptible to rust, I decided to replace them with near-whites that were more rust-resistant.
