Here near the Texas Gulf coast Dortmund blooms continuously spring through to fall including during the heat of summer when many of my roses suffer. I do dead head, but my Dortmund has never been without blooms this year. Black spot is a minor problem in the spring, but it does not render Dortmund leafless as it does many of my roses. My plant grows along a fence and measures about five feet high by twelve feet wide.

Grows and blooms well in zone 6a, Marshfield, Missouri. Huge spring flush. Must dead head to get decent rebloom, sets hips easily.

Noted by Antique Rose Emporium:
"The large, single red blooms are recurrent and each petal overlaps its neighbor, giving the impression of a delicate ruffle. With a white eye set off by brilliant yellow stamens, the flower alone is captivating. The foliage is equally exceptional with its large, glossy, dark green leaves. Also captivating are the thorns. While quite showy with their reddish hue on new growth, they can rudely interrupt the unwary. Plant this climber in a location where its vigorous canes wont intrude into walkways. Be prepared for spectacular displays."
