The genus of Halesia was named after the Reverend Stephen Hales who was an English physiologist, chemist, and inventor, who lived from 1677 to 1761. There is some disagreement of how many species, but 5 species are possible of which 4 are of the southeastern USA and one in China; otherwise one American species with several varieties and one Chinese. Handsome, high quality deciduous small trees or shrubs with white bell-like flowers in spring.
