What's Blooming in AugustWhat's Blooming in August
August 15, 2011

This article launches a new feature at All Things Plants. On the 15th of each month I will highlight plants blooming here at Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens. I'll have photos and will discuss the plants featured. You're invited to discuss these plants, too, but just as important, you're encouraged to show us what's blooming in your garden each month. I'll also have a monthly contest called "Name that Bloom." The first person to correctly identify the plant will have a photo of his/her choice published and featured in the following month. Be sure to check out this month's mystery flower at the end of this article.

I just discovered this small wildflower at Longwood Gardens in southeast Pennsylvania at the edge of their The Meadow. It is native to the central US the most, in Nebraska to Texas, some areas of Wyoming into New Mexico, Arkansas & Missouri and then various spots and areas in: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, one spot in Michigan, and spots and areas in the Southeast from North Carolina into Florida back to Texas. It gets about 6 to 9 inches high and spreads 1 to 3 feet as a matt. It grows in full sun and in dry to moist soil. It forms a deep taproot that helps it survive drought. Not easy to transplant. Some native plant and specialty nurseries sell it, as North Creek Nursery in southeast Pennsylvania.
