It's to Iowa we travel this week, to visit the gardens of Larry Rettig and his wife, Wilma. I've been fortunate, I met Larry's Amana Colonies garden face to face earlier this year. I wandered those garden paths for days and every day I found something new. Let's take a look at these unbelievably beautiful Iowa gardens.

Posted by terrafirma (NE. FL. - Zone 9a) on Aug 22, 2014 1:07 PM This is an evergreen vining shrub in most protected spots in the south. It can be used as a indoor/outdoor container plant elsewhere. The leaves are distinctly ribbed, oval in shape, about 4 - 7 inches in length. Flat clusters of scarlet-red, inch-size "tubes" surrounded by white calyxes to about 5 inches wide, bloom in the late summer to fall. It needs a support for twining, and it can reach a height of about 6 - 8 ft. if not trimmed. It does best in a rich, well draining soil, in partial shade, and will take well to pruning immediately after flowering. [ Reply to this comment | |
