Chokecherries (including the original 'Schubert') sucker profusely and can become a gigantic shrub-like tree. Someone then decided to graft 'Schubert' onto a rootstock that didn't sucker at all and helped the tree grow in a neater fashion. They then began selling the grafted plants as 'Canada Red' and because of how the rootstock changed how the tree grew, many people thought it was an entirely new cultivar. Nowadays, many nurseries now sell the tree as "Canada Red Chokecherry" with 'Schubert' being given as the cultivar name along with the tree's Latin name (I know this because I used to work at a nursery that carried plenty of this tree).

Also, the leaf color of this cultivar surprisingly comes true from seed.

The flowers on this tree last forever (weeks). The leaves come out bright brilliant green, but then fade to a deep burgundy red for the remainder of the year. This tree is HORRIBLE about suckering at the base.

The 'Shubert' cultivar of Common Chokeberry is a true tree form with a single trunk, and its green foliage of spring turns purple-red once the real warmth of summer comes. It blooms with its white flower clusters while the leaves are green. The cultivar of 'Canada Red' is a branch sport of 'Shubert' discovered by Baily Nurseries in southern Minnesota that has a straighter trunk, a better rounded crown, slightly brighter leaves, and with a slightly faster growth rate. The two probably are mixed up in the trade.
