A rare perennial wildflower in Illinois. Endangered listing. Illinois is at the southeastern limit of this Northern Plains prairie milkweed. It is reported only in 6 NE Illinois counties.
Plant is 8 to 20 inches tall, unbranched. Leaves are paired w/ opposite placement at intervals on central stem.
Habitats where found include hill prairies, dry sand prairies, savannas and sandy savannas, also, openings in upland oak woodlands. Prefers full to part sun, dry conditions, and sandy soil.
Monarchs feed on this and other milkweeds.
One of several milkweeds in Illinois that have white flowers.
Flowers last appx. 3 weeks in late spring to mid summer.
