This Pitcher's Bluebill or Purple Leather-Flower, is a twining vine that gets about 10 to 13 feet long. The leaves are opposite and get to be 3 inches by 2 inches in size. It is largely hairless. It is woodier than most clematis. It blooms from May to August, even September. It is a kind of leather-flower clematis with small urn-like flowers that have thick, succulent sepals, thus its name. So far, the plants that I have seen bear flowers that are mostly pale pinkish purple with some cream color. It dies to the ground in late fall. It blooms on new growth and should be pruned in late winter or early spring to not have it eventually become messy. It is not an aggressive vine. It is found around woodlands, thickets, and fence rows from southwest Indiana to eastern Nebraska to Tennessee to Texas and northern Mexico. The species name comes from being named in honor of a Dr. Zina Pitcher who was a botanist of the Great Lakes region. I have only seen this species planted at two different arboretums.

This has been blooming here in zone 8a since May 2013. It currently has a few buds and makes lots of seeds. This plant took three years to bloom and the second plant purchased at the same time still has not bloomed, I can only suppose that it is working on the root system as you can see some foliage.
