Some botanists have recognized this as a third variety of the Meadowsweet Spirea that is found in some alpine, subalpine, and boreal locations in the northeastern USA and southeastern Canada mostly because it has a different chromosome number of 2n=54 and maybe slightly larger flower clusters, but many others just think it is a type of the Broadleaf Meadowsweet (S. alba latifolia).
