This grass species is native to much of both Eurasia and North America, but it is believed that the stock really used in agriculture is from Eurasia. It is usually used as a pasture grass for livestock. It grows about 2 to 3 feet high with blades about 1/3 inch wide and either regular green or blue-green or gray-blue green in color and hairless. It does well in acidic, low fertility soils with heavy metals. It has low salt tolerance. It is a cool season grass that emerges early in the spring. It spreads by rhizomes. It can be a weedy and/or invasive grass depending on location and circumstances, so it is good to check with an agricultural extension person.
