Perennial Divide and Fall Garden Festival
Maricopa County Master Gardeners sponsor this free event, which features plants from Metro Tech High School's Horticultural Program. Other features include area garden clubs offering plant sales and garden tips, local authors signing books, a garden "garage sale," and perennial divide -- a great opportunity to add unusual perennials at a bargain price. The Festival takes place on Saturday, October 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the courtyard at Metro Tech High School, 1900 West Thomas Road in Phoenix. For more information, call (602) 470-1556, extension 1017.

Local Buzz

Diazinon Banned
Although it's been in the works for some time, the Environmental Protection Agency has canceled its registration of the organophosphate diazinon effective immediately. The insecticide was widely used in home gardens under a variety of trade names. An EPA assessment determined that diazinon posed risks "of concern" in residential use, including health risks to children. The manufacturer ceased production, although existing stocks may be moved through its distribution system until December 31, 2004.
