Daylilies and More
The bad news about daylilies is that each flower lasts but a day. The fabulous news about them is that there are plenty of flowers for plenty of days. For a great look at classic and hot new daylilies, visit the Web site of the American Hemerocallis Society. The site is well-organized, with information about awards and winners, conferences, and membership; as well as answers to frequently asked questions.

Mardi Gras Munchies
This unusual mixture is delicious, filling, and portable. Take it to the parade! Adjust amounts to suit personal tastes.

1 cup diced carrots
1 cup diced celery
1/4 cup slivered almonds
1/4 to 1/2 cup pretzel sticks, snapped in half or thirds
1 tablespoon olive oil
dash of soy sauce
1/2 cup oyster crackers
1/2 cup whole oats
1 tablespoon honey

Mix together first four ingredients and set aside. Heat oil and soy sauce in saucepan, add oyster crackers, and stir until coated. Set aside to cool.

Put oats in a skillet (cast iron preferably) and heat slowly, stirring to roast slightly until oats are a medium brown color. Drizzle honey over oats and pour into the bowl with the first four ingredients. Add the crackers, stir well, and enjoy.

Makes about 4 cups.
