Earthly Delights: Gardening By Seasons the Easy Way
I enjoyed Earthly Delights: Gardening By Seasons the Easy Way, by Margot Rochester (Taylor Publishing, 2004; $22.95) so much I just had to finish it -- and I did, standing in the middle of a loud and throbbing rock concert crowd while chaperoning my teenage daughter. This delightful book helps broaden our understanding of the rhythm of the gardening year and our role as gardeners trying to work along with nature. Gardening techniques are presented along with generous doses of personal insight, opinion, and wry humor. The author neatly conveys many practical tips and lessons for easier gardening in tune with natural processes, delivered gently in short essays. If you like my columns, I think you will enjoy this book. Note: the book does mention some plants that will not be winter hardy here in the mid-Atlantic region because the author gardens further south. But the principles and concepts she addresses are applicable everywhere.
