Perennial Garden Guide
The Perennial Plant Association's Guide to Perennial Gardens Web page includes a state-by-state guide to public perennial gardens with display or demonstration features where gardeners can visit, enjoy, and observe perennials in action. Each listing includes basic information about the garden, its purpose, open hours, ticket price (if any), and contact information for you to follow up. You might want to check the list when planning the itinerary for your next summer vacation or weekend getaway.

Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls
The concept of planting both flat and sloped rooftops (and walls) for other than aesthetic reasons is new in this country, but it is well developed elsewhere, particularly in Germany and other parts of Europe. Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls, by Nigel Dunnett and Noel Kingsbury (Timber Press, 2004; $34.95) is a fascinating book, from the eye-catching photos to the unusual plant listing of alpines and other treasures, to the technical discussions on construction considerations. The book may be more detailed than casual readers will want, but the concepts are powerful and will suggest many exciting projects for do-it-yourselfers as well as professional designers and architects. As a gardener, I am enthralled by the possibilities.
