The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
Located in Palm Springs, California, The Living Desert is a botanical garden, zoo, nature preserve, and a little bit of anything else related to the concept of "desert." Its Living Desert Web site describes its various exhibits, defines North American and African deserts and provides lists of plants and animals found at the Living Desert. Some link to pages with complete descriptions and photographs. There's also a section on Conservation that covers such topics as endangered species, cheetah conservation and cactus rustlers.

Favorite or New Plant

Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Regal Mist'
This clumping grass is fabulous when its flowering spikes are backlit with the sun's low rays in early morning or late afternoon. The fall-blooming flowers are a pinkish red and they positively shimmer and glow with backlit The clump reaches about 3 feet tall and wide. It takes full sun or filtered sun and is drought tolerant. Cut back in late winter or early spring to remove spent flowers and rejuvenate.
