Poisonous Plants
If your curiosity is piqued by the mention of poisonous berries on lantana, check out this Poisonous Plants in the Landscape site from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. It can be very illuminating.

Your New "Best Bud"
Earthly Delights, by Margot Rochester (Taylor Trade Publishing, 2004; $22.95) is subtitled "Gardening by the Seasons the Easy Way." I call it "personal gardening advice from a very personable gardener." In fact, this is one of the most intimate gardening books written in a long time. You'll think you're sitting with Margot in her garden as you read it. Not because she is overly detailed or egotistic about her own garden (though she certainly could be) but because her voice is so distinctive, clever, and downright funny. For example, on page 94 Margot writes about poisonous plants. Any chapter that begins, "Holy moly! If you plan to murder someone, look no further than your garden," gets my attention. Her advice comes from her own experience and research and covers many of the cultural practices that simply make gardening easier and more fun. Because she has written columns for years, her style is friendly and her suggestions concise. The really good news is she's working on her second book right now. I can't wait.
