Favorite Goatskin Gloves
I've found my perfect gloves. Over the years I've shifted favorites as new styles came on the market, but I think I've finally found the perfect combination. The glove, made by Handmaster, is goatskin leather in the palm and fingers, the backs are cotton knit, and the wrists are elasticized for a snug fit. This makes them flexible and sturdy at the same time, warm in winter yet cool and breathable in summer, in wet or dry conditions. I never get soil inside them. So far, my current pair has lasted through two winter pruning seasons and two summers. They're $6.95 at Orchard Supply Hardware, in purple or maroon.

Clever Gardening Technique

Plastic Bags Camouflage Ripening Fruit
Plastic grocery bags can help deter birds and squirrels from enjoying the ripening tree fruit before you get to it. Twist the handles around branches to keep the fruits covered during windstorms. Be sure to clip a hole in the bottom of the bag to release rain water so you don't have mushy fruit when one falls from the branch!
