Greenhouse Open House
Van Wingerden Gardens in Fletcher, North Carolina (just south of Asheville), holds their annual open house on Saturday, November 13. Their 37 acres of greenhouses, packed with poinsettias and other seasonal flowers, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and employee hosts will be available to answer questions.

Herbal Vinegar
The book Herbal Vinegar (Storey Books, 1994; $14.95), contains more information than the title implies. You might expect the book's sections on the history of vinegar and its uses, how to make vinegar and how to flavor vinegar, for example. But the book also includes information on growing your own herbs for flavoring vinegar, household uses of vinegar, and a large section of recipes that include body care products as well as culinary marinades, sauces and eight different kinds of mustard. I'm even tempted to try one of the four different recipes for "vinegar pie." Herbal Vinegar is written by Maggie Oster, NGA's regional reporter for the Upper South. Check out her column at
