The Orchid Thief
The Orchid Thief, by Susan Orlean (Random House, 1999; $20), is the story of a writer following a lead about orchids being stolen from government property. It takes place in contemporary Florida but reaches back into history with captivating details about the passion of cultivating the mysterious orchid plant. I was fascinated by the fact that orchid hunters of old would completely denude an area to prevent other hunters from finding any plants at the site. This novel provides an in-depth look at the history of orchid cultivation and much more. It delves into the hidden recesses of human passion and desire. I found it an exhilarating read, full of facts and just enough fancy to make it exciting.
