San Francisco Flower and Garden Show
Lectures, seminars, fabulous demonstration gardens, and vendors of everything growing will be featured at this year's annual San Francisco Flower and Garden Show March 21-25 at the Cow Palace in Daly City. This year's show is titled "Flower Power."

A special exhibition of Japanese koi (fish) will be displayed in 50 tanks alongside koi-related vendors, including educational and club information. There will also be a bonsai exhibition, an Ikebana show, floral arrangements and competitions, the popular orchid pavilion, a miniature garden exhibit that features gardens arranged in boxes 2 1/2 feet square, a new plants exhibit, and the ever popular marketplace, where you can find the latest in gardening equipment and apparel.

Tickets are available at local nurseries or at the door. Children under 11 get in free.

The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control
The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control, by Barbara Ellis and Fern Marhsall Bradley (Rodale Press, 1996; $18), is a complete guide to keeping your garden and yard healthy without using chemicals. It's very easy to use. It contains a disease-symptom guide that includes color photos to help diagnose problems. It also has problem-solving information for particular types of plants, including trees, vegetables, and ornamentals. An insect guide also includes color photos and information about the type of damage they do. All things considered, this is a wonderful book to keep on hand if you wish to garden organically.
