Favorite or New Plant

Cyclamen is an attractive holiday houseplant with its dark green leaves marked with silver, and its gorgeous, fragrant blooms that look like falling stars. Provide it with a bright location indoors and keep the potting mix moist but not soggy. Cyclamen is a double-duty plant, serving well as an outdoor bedding plant for bright shady areas during the cooler months. Plants are hardy to 25 degrees, but blooms will freeze at 32 degrees. Provide a location with very good drainage and maintain moderate soil moisture.

Clever Gardening Technique

Clever Gardening Technique:
If you are like some gardeners, in the winter you tend to run out of greenhouse space or indoor areas for overwintering plants long before you run out of plants that need protection. Semi-hardy species may get by if you can sink the container in the soil so the warmth of the soil protects the roots, which otherwise would be exposed to the full brunt of the cold air. If there is room to sink the pots in a protected spot, such as near the home so they are shielded from winter winds, all the better. Mulch the plants well and be ready to cover them during especially cold weather.
