Worm Compost
Rainbow Mealworms raises mealworms and sells their castings as a byproduct. You can buy them in 25- and 50-pound bags on a first-come-first-served basis. Sometimes bags are 50 cents each, but much of the time they're free! Best to call ahead, (310-635-3249) to make sure landscape contractors haven't taken them all! The company is located at 129 East Spruce Street, Compton, one block south of Rosecrans, one block west of Alameda.

Easy-To-Grow Bulbs
This Web site sells only bulbs known to naturalize here in southern California. They know which varieties work, and sell only those, so you can be sure of success and profligate growth for years to come. The site also provides extensive information on planting and care, and I love their encouragement: "Your garden is a personal thing and it should please you. Don't worry about "right" and "wrong" as you create, just follow your heart."
