Clever Gardening Technique

Bag Your Apples
Believe it or not, paper bags have become a favorite in my arsenal for protecting my fruit. I use small lunch bags and a stapler. When apples are about an inch in diameter, about the time they need to be thinned, I staple paper bags over each fruit. The bags keep the fruit pest-free without the need for chemical controls. Yes, the trees look kind of funny, and I only have three apple trees so it doesn't take more than a couple of hours to do. But it works! I remove the bags in late August so the apples can ripen, and I have terrific fruit.
