The 2005 Dahlia Shows
Every year I try to visit at least one or two dahlia shows. The Colorado Dahlia Society Web site provides a list of shows around the country so you can check for local or regional shows. You'll love the displays and can pick up growing tips from local experts, too. If you can't get to a formal show, be sure to check out the dahlias blooming in your neighborhood -- it's a homegrown show that's sure to please.

Plant Shopping in the Empire and Garden States
The Adventurous Gardener: Where to Buy the Best Plants in New York and New Jersey, by Ruah Donnelly (The Horticultural Press, 2005; $25.95), joins its earlier, award-winning companion volume for New England (now in its second printing) as a resource for gardeners who are willing to travel to seek out high-quality plants and interesting nurseries. Each nursery profile includes detailed information about types of plants available, driving directions, location and hours, as well as Web site and catalog addresses. Nongardener travel companions also will appreciate the suggestions of nearby attractions and good places to eat. Happy Trails!
