Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
Lots of good things go on at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, established in 1938 in Coral Gables, FL. As part of the Fairchild, the South Florida Species and Habitat Conservation team works on issues of native plants in south Florida. They map, monitor, and do research on plant communities and maintain a collection to support both research and restoration.

Tool or Gardening Product

Rotating Ratchet Pruner
Whether you have arthritis or not, it's wise to choose tools that work harder than your wrists do. Shopping for a new hand pruner has always been a brand name thing for me, but a wise garden center manager directed me to the Smith and Hawken Pro Rotating Ratchet Pruner. A ratcheting mechanism allows the tool to grip the branch so you can release your grip, then squeeze several times, if needed, to make deep cuts. Meanwhile, the handle rolls with your wrist, reducing strain on your hand. Ergonomic grip with hand shield, replaceable parts, and a price tag under $30 make this pruner a pleasure to own.
