Favorite or New Plant

Cardinal Flower
The cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is one of my favorites for a water feature, at the pond's edge, or in a bog garden. It prefers a rich soil, well amended with compost and peat, and it should be planted outside the pond. The tall stems (2-1/2 to 3 feet) are spectacular in late summer and early fall with their bright red blooms. It is a magnet for hummingbirds during their migration, plus it adds color when much of the garden is starting to wane.
