Filoli Fall Harvest
The Filoli Gardens will hold their 12th annual Autumn at Filoli festival on Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Among the variety of fall-inspired activities, guests will be able to sample delicious, tree-ripened, heritage varieties of apples and pears, enjoy fresh-pressed apple cider, and take docent-guided tours throughout Filoli's magnificent orchard.

In addition to the fruit samplings and orchard tours, you can take a hay ride throughout Filoli's vast meadows and discover handmade scarecrows displayed among the garden paths and tucked away in corners of the mansion.

Admission for the festival is $15 for adult members, $20 for adult nonmembers, $5 for children 5-17, and free for children under 5. Barbecue lunches for adults and children are available for $15 and $6 respectively, and must be reserved in advance. For ticket information, call (650) 364-8300, ext. 508.

Clever Gardening Technique

Newspaper Collar for Transplanting Cactus
When transplanting prickly potted cactus plants, use a collar made of newspaper to prevent injury to fingers. Sometimes gloves just aren't enough. Fold several sheets of newspaper into a long, narrow strip. Surround the cactus at the widest part of the plant and gently slip the cactus out of the pot. The newspaper collar will grip the plant while you gently settle it into the new pot and fill with cactus mix potting soil. Once the plant is in place, remove the newspaper and congratulate yourself on a job well done.
