Landscape Basics
Dig This! Landscaping Without a Back Hoe or a Big Budget for Northern California and Beyond, by Kate Anchordoguy (Sasquatch Books, 2003; $19.95), is a book you should read before you plant your garden. It addresses landscape design, soil preparation, plant selection, and all those other important things that often get put on the back burner.

There are black and white illustrations for everything from installing irrigation to placing rocks correctly in the landscape. She tells you how to determine soil grade and how to change it if you need to. The step-by-step process of laying wire to prevent gophers and moles from invading is worth the price of the book. It's fascinating reading for amateur and professional gardeners alike!
