The Changing Garden
The Changing Garden, by Betsy Fryberger (University of California Press, 2003; $34.95), is a pictorial history of landscape gardening. The many quality prints contained in the book provide a visual guide to famous gardens such as Versailles, Windsor Great Park, Kew, and many others. Betsy Fryberg did an amazing job of collecting information, illustrations, photographs, and facts. If her writing seems a bit stiff, it is due to her academic background. She is curator of Prints and Drawings at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University.

What I found most interesting were the gardens depicted by artists such as John Singer Sargent, Hubert Robert, and Henri Edmond Cross. In many cases, the same garden scene would be painted by several different artists over a period of many years, if not centuries. This happens frequently throughout the book, especially in the Italian gardens. If you are curious about the history of gardens, or if you just want a collection of beautiful garden art, this is the book for you.
