Filoli Flower Show
Filoli is considered one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. The magnificent formal gardens and elegant buildings have been lovingly tended since Filoli was built. Now a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli will continue to hold court for future generations.

One of their regular fundraising events is the annual Flower Show, held this year from May 11 to 14. Various floral artists work with the existing art and architecture throughout the buildings to create elaborate and amazing designs. The show is open to the public and is a grand way to celebrate spring. While you are there, stroll through the gardens, and you will be inspired. The gardens are at 86 Canada Road, Woodside, CA. Flower Show general admission: $20; opening night reception: $65; afternoon teas: $50; Mother's Day Champagne Brunch: $70. For reservations, call (650) 364-8300, ext. 508; or go to:

Sunset Western Landscaping Book
Published by the credible Sunset Publishing Company in Menlo Park, CA, the Sunset Western Landscaping Book, by Kathleen Norris Brenzel (Sunset Publishing Company, 2006; $29.95), has fabulous ideas for gardeners who want to completely redo their landscape or just freshen up a tired, old garden. The book has sections on Gardens, Structures, Plants, Decor, Solutions and Planning. It contains the full-color, gorgeous photographs that Sunset photographers are famous for, but better yet, it's full of great ideas. For example, if you don't want the bother of having a water feature in your garden, use a recycled mirror to mimic the water. Surround it with plants and viola! -- a mock pond.
