Clever Gardening Technique

Take a Sunshine Inventory
As you stroll your landscape, make note of where the sun hits and where it's shaded at this time of year. That way, in early spring or late fall, when trees have little or no foliage and you're doing most of your planting, you'll be less inclined to plant sun-lovers in spots that spend much of their summers shaded. As you take your "sunshine inventory", plan to move any plants that are struggling from lack of sunlight. This is often expressed by reduced flowering and, sometimes, diseased foliage.

Shows & Events

Maymont House, Richmond, Virginia
Whether you're a history-, nature-, or garden-lover, or all three, you'll want to plan a visit to Maymont, the 100-acre Victorian country estate of the late James Henry and Sallie May Dooley. The 12,000-square-foot, 33-room house is a combination of "Romanesque Revival style with the picturesque Queen Anne." There are elaborate Japanese and Italian gardens, as well as a nature center, wildlife exhibits, and farm. The Maymont hosts a range of events and activities -- from a workshop on "The Art of Good Manners" to an "Evening Bat Search." There's something for everyone!
