Sweet Autumn Clematis
Now is the time to enjoy the seasonal spectacle of the sweet autumn clematis (Clematis paniculata) in the landscape. Planted near the base of a tree, this clematis vine will grow its way upward 20 feet or more. Then, in late summer and early fall, cascades of sweetly scented white blooms will put on a grand show. Plant in soil that is amended with a generous supply of compost. Locate in full to part sun. Remember to mark your calendar to remind yourself to cut this vine back to the ground each spring or be ready for an impenetrable tangled mess. When new growth resumes, guide the new sprouts upward on the trellis or support system.
