South African Bulb Sale
At the University of California at Irvine Arboretum, on August 26 to 27, from 10am to 3pm. Entrance to the parking lot is on the southeast corner of Jamboree Road and Campus Drive. Call (949) 824-5833 for more information.

This Arboretum is worth a visit at any time of year, but especially during this bulb sale. Over the past five years, the garden layout has expanded, the specimen plantings have multiplied, and the already impressive sale material has increased in variety and quantity. Photos and mature "mother" plants on display help visitors make appropriate choices for their home gardens. I make sure to walk through the Arboretum several times a year at each of its sales so I can observe the bulbs, cacti, succulents, tropicals, and perennials in various stages of growth and bloom. I note which to buy at later sales.

Mary Lou's Birthday Sale
If you haven't yet visited Heard's Country Gardens in Westminster (14391 Edwards St., (714) 894-2444,, do so this month (yes, August!). It's owner Mary Lou's birthday month, and she's celebrating by giving us the presents - 20% off all plant purchases.

For years, I've depended on the tremendous selection of 4-inch and gallon-size perennials here. Even though my garden is in hot, inland Pasadena, I can always count on "real" answers from Mary Lou and her staff in response to my perennial questions. Besides, just wandering through the garden is a real treat, it's truly a luxuriant vision of a homey country garden, with in-the-ground mature plantings and garden-crafty items in the several authentic buildings.
