Discovering Nature's Alphabet
Discovering Nature's Alphabet, by Krystina Castella and Brian Boyle (Heyday Books, 2006; $15.95), is the most charming ABC book I have seen. It uses the common images we see every day in nature to create our own "word world." I found that I was looking at the world with new eyes after thumbing through this little pictograph. It would make a lovely gift for a child. For more about the book and activities on the theme, visit:

Aquarium Water for Indoor Plants
If you keep an aquarium, here's a tip for keeping your indoor plants happy. Stir the gravel in the bottom of the tank. Dip out as much as 20 percent of the water and save it in a deep bowl. Top off the tank with fresh water. Submerge potted plants in the bowl of "fish soup." The nutrients suspended in the aquarium water contain ideal nourishment for a few lucky plants. You can usually get three or four potted plants watered with this method.
