Holidays at Dunsmuir
Celebrate the holidays at Dunsmuir House in Oakland, December 2-17. Dunsmuir House is a historic mansion open to the public. The grounds are extensive and the house is decorated to the hilt for the holidays. It is worth a visit if you have never been. The meandering gardens are not formal but include a meadow, grotto, dairy barn, carriage house, and a beautiful pond. The grounds are open for walking Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the schedule of events and tickets, call (510) 615-5555, or visit:

Clever Gardening Technique

Lazy Man's Mulch
If you have a cutting garden or a vegetable garden that you won't be using over the winter, I have a tip that will improve the soil and prevent weeds from growing. Simply chop up the existing plant material that is in the bed now and leave it on the surface of the soil. Add a layer of potting soil to cover, and by spring you will have gorgeous, friable soil ready for planting. The key is to chop the plant material into small, 1- to 2-inch pieces, so it will break down easily over the winter months.
