2007 Arbor Day National Poster Contest
"Trees are Terrific...and forests are too!" That's the theme for this year's Arbor Day National Poster Contest for fifth-graders. This site encourages students, parents, and teachers to participate in a fun way to learn about trees. There are free materials to order, details about state deadlines (March 2 or 5 in mid-Atlantic region), contact persons, PDF activity resource packets, a Tree Planting Resource Kit for Volunteers, and a Celebrate Arbor Day Guide Book. The Youth Education section includes materials for preschool and elementary grades.

The Writer in the Garden
Despite the weather, the enjoyable collection of literary tidbits in The Writer in the Garden audiobook (Highbridge Audio, 1997; $17.95) brings to mind the best, the annoying, the befuddling, the humorous -- really a wide range of gardening moments. Here's a sampling of more than 40 garden writings by Vita Sackville-West, E.B. White, Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Jekyll, Edith Wharton, Louise Beebe Wilder, Colette, and more. The various readers make this an even more delightful auditory stroll through many gardens ... from the warmth of the living room.
