Water and Weed
It may still be mid-spring, but it's important to weed out undesirable plants before they reseed themselves. To pull tough weeds out more easily, water deeply the day or two before the effort. The water fills the air pore cells between the soil particles where the fibrous roots grow, enabling the weeds to slip out much easier. If you leave pulled weeds in garden pathways for dry mulch, be sure to leave them with their roots up, so they won't reroot themselves. A better idea is to add them to the compost pile. But if any seedstalks have developed, dispose of the weed altogether so you don't unwittingly recycle its seeds.
