Favorite or New Plant

Variegated Shell Ginger
Grown throughout our region, variegated shell ginger is a beauty that's upright, bold, and bright. Not as floppy as some of its relatives, it does occasionally lean a bit when in bloom. This loose habit makes it perfect for a well-defined border planting. The irregular stripes of yellow and green that color the leaves have coarse texture. Even in zone 8, its roots are hardy, but in our region the mature plants flower. The pink-tipped white blooms do resemble seashells, thus the name, but its their arrangement on long, arching stems that offers such great contrast to the leaves.

Tool or Gardening Product

The shaft is steel-reinforced, the kick is extra-wide and raised forward. Topped by a green, nonlatex, O-ring handle big enough for two hands, this tool deserves your attention if for no other reason than it is guaranteed for life. Visit: for retailers in your area.
