Inter-City Cactus and Succulent Sale
Billed as the biggest cactus and succulent exhibit in the country, the Inter-City Cactus and Succulent Show in Ayers Hall at the Arboretum of Los Angeles County in Arcadia on August 18th and 19th features more than 2,500 plants on display, some more than 30 years old. I always find something I don't have, and something new to intrigue me. The vendors are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Favorite or New Plant

Fuchsia for Christmas
I love fuchsias and you can have some in bloom for Christmas if you choose the right varieties and take cuttings now. Any fuchsia that does not need long days to set buds is suitable. Some of my favorites include 'Angel's Flight', 'California', 'Dollar Princess', 'Elfriede Ott', 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt', 'Golden Anniversary', 'Hula Girl', 'Kathy Louise', 'Koralle', 'Leverkusen', 'Red Jacket', 'Stella Ann', and 'Trumpeter'. Root 3 to 4 inch long terminal cuttings in a loose potting mix. Transplant them into 6-inch pots and pinch new growth every few weeks through October to encourage branching.

Grow them in a bright window or under fluorescent lamps 3 to 6 inches above the plants for 12 to 16 hours a day until budset. Plants will bloom for months.
