Gardening in the Coastal South
Written by Marie Harrison, Gardening in the Coastal South (Pineapple Press, Inc., 2003; $14.95) is a terrific reference for our region. A central section of color photos forms the heart of solid plant information clearly presented. Harrison's comments are spot on, as are her details of gardening experiences in our part of the world. Her stories are fun and her lists comprehensive.

Favorite or New Plant

Not enough shade for impatiens? Or just looking for a lush annual to spice up your collection? The name is 'Viva' Sunpatiens, part of the collection available at Home Depot. There are five solid colors, including a fine shade of lavender and also one with variegated leaves that is stunning. The leaf shape is a bit longer and narrower than classic shade impatiens, but smaller and less strongly marked than the New Guineas. I like their looks, in part because they are vigorous, reaching more than 2 feet tall and wide with handsome leaves and sweet flowers.
