Plant Sale
Most botanical gardens hold their plant sales over a period of 2 or 3 days, but Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, Arizona, must know that gardeners never buy exactly the right plants on the first pass, and may need to return for a few more! Their plant sale runs from October 5th through the 21st, daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On weekends, experts are on hand to help with plant and gardening questions. For a list of featured speakers and topics, go to their Web site:

Don't miss the arboretum's varied demonstration gardens (tucked near the picnic area), offering great examples for blending plants with living spaces.

Clever Gardening Technique

Lazy Gardener's Compost
Fill a plastic garbage bag with dried leaves and grass clippings. Poke a few small holes in the bag for air circulation. Wet the material. Add a shovelful of soil to add microorganisms. Shake the bag every couple of weeks and moisten the material as it dries out. It will take four or more months to have dark crumbly compost, but it won't take much time or space!
