Find Your County Extension Office
The County Extension office is a great place for gardening advice, free publications, assistance with diagnosing plant problems, soil testing, and classes such as the Master Gardener program. This Extension Service Web site provides a fast way to locate your local Extension office by clicking on your state and then your county. Most states also include links to the land grant university for more gardening information.

Clever Gardening Technique

Composting in a Hole
Remember the stories about how the native Americans taught the pilgrims to put a fish into a hole and then add soil over it and plant a seed? The decomposing fish fed the growing plant, right? Well you can do something similar in your garden beds. Dig a hole about a foot deep and put your kitchen scraps into the hole. Then cover the hole with soil and set a rock or other marker on the spot to help you remember the location. Next spring, plant a flowering perennial or shrub in that spot and it will benefit from the decomposed organic matter below the surface. Your children will find this technique especially interesting!
