Climate Prediction Center
Wondering what the new year will bring in terms of weather? In the next week or next three months? The National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center provides both short-term and long-term outlooks for temperature and precipitation for the United States. There is also a US Hazards Assessment and US Drought Assessment on the site.

Winterizing the Greenhouse
In past years I have insulated the glass walls of my small greenhouse with a special bubble wrap sold by hobby greenhouse suppliers. Because the door does not seal, there is always quite a draft, so I usually shut the greenhouse down until March when I start seeds. This fall I'm trying a different product, an insulation that combines a thin layer of polyethylene bubbles with foil on either side. I've placed this on the northfacing roof and all the walls up to 4 feet. I still doubt that this will be enough to justify using the greenhouse during the coldest months. What I have finally accomplished that will be worthwhile whenever the greenhouse is used is a way to seal the sliding door. Using a special foil tape, strips of the foil insulation were attached to the door, with about 10 inches extending beyond the door. Velcro tape was attached to these "wings" and to the greenhouse, forming a barrier that will keep out the wind and cold.
