Bouquets to Art
The de Young Museum comes alive with flowers during Bouquets To Art, March 11 to 15. Floral artists do their best to interpret various works of art using flowers. It's amazing to see the creative genius at work. One artist was assigned a bust of Voltaire. She used pink celosia to create "Voltaire's Brain," complete with an encircling golden wreath of laurel.
The riot of color and scent of hundreds of thousands of flowers is a delight for the senses, as if the newly remodeled de Young weren't enough. There are teas and lectures to be enjoyed, too. For information on special events, hours, and ticket prices, visit: http://www.bouquetstoart.org. Look for me, I'll be there!
The California Gardener's Guide, Volume II, by Nan Sterman (Cool Springs Press, 2007; $24.99) features 186 plants specific to California's unique growing regions. For each plant there is a full-color photograph, a zone map, special planting instructions, minimum and maximum temperature recommendations, a watering guide, recommended companion plants, height and spread, whether or not the plant is fragrant, if the flowers are suitable for cutting and arrangements, if it is suitable to container culture, and much, much more. This book should be in every beginning gardener's library. It goes further than the Sunset Western Garden Book and is easier to use.
