Persian Shield Plant
When it comes to dazzling metallic purple foliage, the Persian shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus) has it all. It provides a stunning contrast in container gardens and mixed flower beds. It does best in compost-rich soil that is kept uniformly moist. Bright light will maintain its unique coloration, but avoid direct sun that can scorch the foliage. Persian shield is rated hardy in zones 9 to 11 outdoors, so grow it as a houseplant over the winter, then replant in the spring garden.
