Favorite or New Plant

Kids of all ages love to grow the "talking flowers" -- snapdragons. These annuals will reseed if allowed to do so. Plant in early spring even though the weather is cool at night. They even welcome spring snows! You can purchase snapdragon plants as transplants or start them from seed in early February indoors. Even though they are classified as annual flowers, the mother plant can make it through a mild winter and you may get volunteer seedlings nearby. Plant in full sun in a compost-enriched soil and enjoy these colorful and "talkative flowers." Gently squeeze a blossom and start up a conversation.

Clever Gardening Technique

Apple Worm Trap
The apple trees are in bloom and soon the codling moths will be flying. Here's an easy way to trap these critters and reduce damage:

1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 banana peel

Combine the above ingredients in a 1-gallon milk jug and fill the jug almost full with water. Place the cap on the jug and shake this mixture vigorously to blend. Hang the gallon jug with brew in the middle of each apple tree. Remove the cap after you have secured the jug to a branch. It won't be long before this trap will capture visiting codling moths and reduce the invasion of these apple pests.
