Frog Listening Network
The Tampa Audubon Society keeps activities going all the time, but this Frog Listening Network event at 7:30 p.m., August 29th at Flatwoods Park is particularly intriguing and important. Most agree that the status of frogs is an indicator of habitat health, but those who did not grow up hearing frog songs don't know what's missing. The network offers a way to learn and appreciate their natural musicianship. The outing fills quickly, so e-mail now:

Chinese Lantern Plant
In honor of the Olympics and to illustrate the humor so often associated with plant names, grow Abutilon megapotamicum 'Variegatum' called Chinese lanterns. Abutilon is the family name of flowering maples, which are not maples at all, although some of the flowering maples do have five-digit leaves reminiscent of maple leaves. The Chinese lantern plant, native to Brazil, is a dandy plant, hardy in Zone 9, and easy to grow in beds or containers with protection from afternoon sun.
