Enjoy a visit to one of the many wonderful Southwestern public gardens decked out with lights or luminarias during the holidays. For example, in Palm Desert, California, The Living Desert's Wildlights Holiday Festival will showcase a display of more than 350,000 twinkling lights, along with an "iceless" skating rink, live music, wood-burning fireplaces, hot apple cider, and hot chocolate. WildLights will be held on Nov. 28-30, Dec. 5-7, Dec. 12-14, Dec. 19-23, Dec. 26-Jan. 4. Admission is $7.75 for adults, $5.50 for children (ages 3-12), $6.00 for Living Desert members. or (760) 346-5694, ext. 2000 for information.

Clever Gardening Technique

Determining Frost Damage
If frost hits your plants, leave the blackened, damaged foliage as is. Although unattractive, it protects interior foliage from future frosts. Wait to trim until spring when new growth appears. Otherwise, you may inadvertently prune off live tissue, as damage can look worse than it is.
