Christmas Bird Count
A great holiday tradition for many families is to participate in the Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count, which has been an ongoing project for 109 years. From December 14, 2008, through January 5, 2009, for a fee of $5, people can join others in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action. Inspiring Thoughts for Gardeners
This is the season of magic and miracles, but gardeners know that these happen year-round. Just in case you're feeling a bit of garden burnout as the 2009 garden catalogs fill the mailbox, take some time to get away from the holiday frenzy and re-fuel your spirit by reading some of the stories in Chicken Soup for the Gardener's Soul -- 101 Stories to Sow Seeds of Love, Hope and Laughter by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Marion Owen, Cindy Buck, Carol Sturgulewski, Pat Stone and Cynthia Brian (HCI, 2001, $14.95).
This uplifting collection of stories, written by both hobbyists and celebrity gardeners, is filled with the special richness offered by the experience of gardening.
