Annual Show of the Western North Carolina Orchid Society
The Western North Carolina Orchid Society will hold its annual show at the NC Arboretum on March 28 and 29. The popular juried plant show will also feature award-winning orchid vendors, many who are nationally recognized growers and hybridizers. Rare and unusual plants, specialty lighting, and orchid supplies will be available for purchase. The event is free, Arboretum parking is $6.

2009 Perennial Plant of the Year
The Perennial Plant Association has named Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' as the 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. Commonly called golden variegated Japanese forest grass, the plant resembles a miniature cascading bamboo. Individual blades are a bright yellow with very thin green stripes. Hardy in zones 5 to 9, the perennial grows best in moist, humus rich, and well-drained soil. In hot climates, afternoon shade is recommended.
